Hi Riya! Can you start by telling us a little bit about yourself and how you got started in the makeup industry?

Hi, My name is Riya, and I completed my graduation in makeup from America. I am also a professional prosthetic makeup artist and I have worked with over 17 plus celebrities, gaining valuable experience along the way. I also published a book titled "The Female Father" which is dedicated to celebrating the strength of women. Additionally, I have been a psychology student, and I have a deep passion for makeup psychology. And I am running my own academy, where I share my knowledge and skills with aspiring makeup artists.

What inspired you to become a makeup artist?

My passion for altering appearances and the boost in confidence that makeup may provide served as my inspiration. I get real motivation from seeing how happy it makes other people. Also, I’ve always been fascinated by how makeup can transform a person's appearance and evoke emotions. I wanted to learn how to bring characters to life and enhance their narratives through makeup. Ultimately, it’s a blend of art, expression, and the joy of making people feel beautiful that drives me.

How do you feel about your journey as a makeup artist in India?

My journey as a makeup artist in India has been incredibly fulfilling and enriching. I’ve had the opportunity to learn from diverse cultures and styles, which has shaped my unique approach. The vibrant film and fashion industries here have allowed me to explore my creativity in exciting ways. I've faced challenges, but each experience has strengthened my skills and determination. Overall, I feel grateful to be part of such a dynamic and inspiring field.

Can you share some tips on how someone can become a celebrity makeup artist in India like you?

To become a makeup artist for celebrities, develop a solid portfolio, engage in active networking, and never stop improving your craft. Passion and perseverance are essential!

What is one makeup technique that you believe every beginner should master first?

One essential makeup technique every beginner should master is applying a flawless base, like foundation or concealer. This requires not only technical skill but also attention to work ethics—ensuring each client gets the same high level of care. Personal hygiene, like using clean brushes, is crucial for safe application. In social interactions, it's important to be respectful and patient, while communication skills ensure you are clear about the client’s preferences, creating a professional and comfortable experience.

What’s your personal favorite makeup product that everyone should have in their kit?

My personal favorite makeup product that everyone should have in their kit is a versatile lipstick. It not only adds color to the lips but can double as blush for a quick touch-up, blending seamlessly for a fresh look. A good foundation sets the base, while eye shadow can enhance the eyes, and mascara completes the look by adding definition. Together, these essentials create a balanced, polished appearance suitable for any occasion.

How do you stay inspired and creative in your artistry?

To stay inspired and creative as a makeup artist, I constantly explore new trends and techniques through social media, beauty blogs, and fashion shows. Experimenting with different color palettes and textures keeps my artistry fresh. Engaging with other artists and clients also sparks new ideas, while personalizing looks based on individual features and personalities fuels my creativity. Lastly, taking breaks to refresh my mind ensures I stay motivated and innovative.

Can you share a funny or memorable experience you've had with a client?

Once,had the surprise of my life when she met Shah Rukh Khan. Little did she know she would be doing his makeup that day! As soon as she realized who he was, she completely forgot all her makeup techniques in her excitement. It was hilarious watching her flustered, trying to apply foundation while starstruck! She kept muttering,Oh my God, it’s SRK! It turned into a funny chaos, but they both had a great laugh about it later!

Are there any upcoming projects or exciting news you’d like to share with us?

I am working on several exciting initiatives, such as a joint venture with a new fashion brand! And Yes, I have an exciting project in the works that I can not reveal just yet, but it's something truly special and close to my heart. It involves a fresh, innovative approach to makeup artistry, and I’m confident it will inspire others. While I can't share the details right now, I promise it will be worth the wait.
